“Parallel Eyes” is a multimedia project that aims to re-examine the construction of Southern Italy’s cultural identity from visual and sociological perspectives.
During the Neorealist period, Southern Italy – the artist’s region of origin – was studied by anthropologists and ethnographers who, together with filmmakers and photographers, used their images and research to portray a society as archaic and primitive, tied to the irrational and to superstition.
In this project, which includes historical archive material and photographs produced by the artist, the viewer is confronted with images that represent part of a vast ritual heritage that is still very much alive.
The imagery created is deliberately evocative rather than descriptive.
For this reason, the photographs are altered using analogue and digital manipulation techniques, drawing us into a re-enchanted, sensory and spiritual universe.
For Rollo, photography is a means of creating multiple metaphors for reality, rather than a tool for representing and documenting facts. His work explores the Mediterranean, deconstructing contemporary and historical social and visual stereotypes to offer new perspectives on this region. Through the reappropriation of stories, memories and visual materials, his projects aim to create and amplify a sense of community and belonging.
