Journeys through the Lands of Return

A conversation with the artist Valentina Schito: on emptiness, memories and new narratives

What does it mean to return home after years spent elsewhere?

A return that is not merely geographical, but emotional, identity-based and cultural. It is a return that carries with it a dual sense of time, a space suspended between two worlds: what has been experienced through places, archives and family histories, and what one returns to with that ambivalence between belonging and detachment.

The project deliberately adopts the title of the exhibition ‘Journeys into the Lands of Remorse’ hosted at Castello Volante, which in turn references Ernesto De Martino’s *La terra del rimorso*, establishing a web of references and reinterpretations between artistic practices and anthropological research that is not intended as a nostalgic retreat, but rather as a creative act.

We will meet Valentina Schito, a young artist who will recount her own experience of returning through her project, *Il tempo delle forme*, which reworks archive photographs – including some by Giuseppe Palumbo currently on display at Castello Volante – giving rise to hybrid narratives straddling past and present.

A gathering to create on the margins, to envisage new cultural communities and the role of art in contemporary micro-geographies, to transform the return into a political and creative act, whilst reflecting on a concrete and widespread generational condition.
